Formerly called Abyssinia. An ancient empire on the E. coast of Africa. From 1936 to 1941, part of Italian East Africa. Federated with Ethiopia from 1952 to 1993. In 1974 Emperor Haile Selassie was deposed and a republic proclaimed.
