Formerly a province of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia declared its independence in Mar., 1939. A treaty was immediately concluded with Germany guaranteeing Slovakian independence but providing for German “protection” for 25 years.
In 1945 the republic ended and Slovakia again became a part of Czechoslovakia.
On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
