Antigua

Antigua is an island located in the West Indies, southeast of Puerto Rico.

Antigua was one of the presidencies of the former Leeward Islands colony 15 until becoming a Crown Colony in 1956. It became an Associated State of the United Kingdom in 1967 and an independent nation on November 1, 1981, taking the name of Antigua and Barbuda.

Antigua stamps were discontinued in 1890 and resumed in 1903. In the interim, stamps of Leeward Islands
were used. Between 1903-1956, stamps of Antigua and Leeward Islands were used concurrently.

Above is a sheet of all the stamps of this island country, I have in my collection. There is only one stamp I've got inscribed Antigua & Barbuda. Stamps were inscribed Antigua & Barbuda post independence in 1981.

Embellished Christmas Sheetlet Pack - Australia 2014

This pack also came to me along with the stamp pack in the surprise package from Australia. The contemporary stamp issues for Christmas this year are presented here in a pack that consists of two sheetlets of 10 self adhesive stamps each of the two designs.

The festive and colourful contemporary stamps represent the familiar trappings and sentiments of Christmas celebration and recall techniques of paper cut design as well as snow crystals.

Christmas Stamp Pack - Australia 2014

On October 31 earlier this year, Australia issued their annual Christmas stamps. The issue consists of two religious and four contemporary designs. The religious stamps are based on stained-glass windows in Melbourne’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which is both the tallest and the largest church building in Australia and one of the world’s largest Gothic revival 19th century churches comparable in size to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. The stamps depict two of the church’s many beautiful stained glass windows, showing the Nativity of Christ and the Flight into Egypt.

I received a nice package from Australia a day before Christmas day with this Stamp Pack in it. What you see below is the front and back of the pack followed by the Christmas stamps, all six issues and the minisheet of the year in it.

Surprise Package from Australia

I received this package from Hans. Apart from the Christmas stamps and sheets in it, the label on the cover is also very special. The air mail labels were issued on 1 July 2014 as part of a prestige booklet containing stamps commemorating 100 years of Airmail in Australia. It is a parcel label. There is a smaller one for letters.

Christmas Stamps Set - Alderney 2014

Since this is my first ever post on stamps of Alderney, I will first talk a little about the island itself. Alderney is the most northerly of the Channel Islands. It is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The Channel Islands are an archipelago of British Crown Dependencies in the English Channel, off the French coast of Normandy. They include two separate bailiwicks: the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Stamps for use on Alderney are provided by the Guernsey Post Office. Alderney's first Christmas stamps were issued in 2010. From then on every year a set of stamps has been issued.

This year's Christmas stamps of Alderney have all been created by local schoolchildren during a competition held by Guernsey Post in which the youngsters had to get creative and begin thinking about the festive season in early springtime. The designs were used on the stamps that were issued on 6.11.2014.

Christmas Mail 2014 7 - Great Britain

Christmas cover from Great Britain. Its got all the seven stamps from the set. The five stamps designs feature festive family traditions from carol singing and buying the tree to posting cards and building a snowman. Since 2006, 1st and 2nd Class come in two sizes to reflect the different costs of postage for standard and larger items. The 1st and 2nd images are repeated on Large 1st and 2nd Class stamps which reveal more detail on the wider format stamps. This year too, there are two sizes of the 1st and 2nd Class stamps, making seven different values in the set.

Royal Mail’s policy for Christmas stamps is to alternate religious and secular themes. However, to provide choice for customers, 1st and 2nd Class Madonna and Child stamps issued first last year have also been made available this year.

Cover - New Zealand

Another cover I received earlier this year. This one from New Zealand's got the Royal Visit 2014 commemorative stamp on it. The stamp was issued as part of a set of two stamps to celebrate the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son Prince George to New Zealand.

The stamp depicts a portrait taken by Kate’s father of the royal couple with their son Prince George at the Middleton family home. Must get both the stamps from this set for my collection sometime.

Cover - USA

The U.S. Postal service released a limited-edition Forever stamp in March earlier this year, featuring the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Jimi Hendrix. I received this cover with the stamps on it also in March. Had just slipped by me posting it here on the blog.

The stamp is designed to resemble a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve and shows Hendrix wearing one of his trademark military jackets and playing one of his white Fender Stratocaster guitars. Last year, the Postal Service honored other musicians such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Lydia Mendoza as part of its new music icons series. Janis Joplin was added to the list in August this year. Wish to have all these stamps soon.

Cover - Denmark

I received this lovely cover from Denmark today. Post Danmark issued three stamps with motifs of winter berries on 13th Oct 2014. The three stamps are poetic interpretations of the snowberry, the lingonberry and the firethorn, some of the most popular winter plants in Denmark. Complete set on the cover.

Christmas Mail 2014 - 6, Spain

Christmas cover from Spain. Thank you so much Juan Blanco . Both the Class A and Class B stamps issued on 11th November by Spanish Post are on this cover. One is in a classic style and the other, modern.

The Class A stamp bears the image of a stained-glass window depicting a typical scene of the birth of Baby Jesus, with the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. It is accompanied by the message “Merry Christmas” written in the four official languages spoken in Spain. Cold foil was added to the stamp to accentuate the colours and give greater depth to the stained-glass image.

The Class B stamp in mini-sheet format is made up of six equal stamps joined together to form a Christmas tree. The mini-sheet as a whole frames a Christmas card full of good wishes to “Light up Your Christmas”. Unique to the stamp is the novelty of thermal ink, that gives the impression that the stars shine when you slide your fingers over them.

This year Croatian Post issued a special Christmas stamp depicting symbolical Advent wreath. Stamp has been issued in 20-stamp sheet and in booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps and there is also First Day Cover (FDC). My friend Ivana was kind enough to send me the mint stamp too.
