Created in 1947 from territory with predominantly Muslim population in Eastern and Western India. Became an independent Islamic Republic within the British Commonwealth in 1956. The eastern provinces declared their independence in 1971 and are now known as Bangladesh.
On 30 January 1972 Pakistan left the Commonwealth but rejoined on 1 October 1989.
